About us

You may be wondering just what kind of person or people take photographs of cow patties or blank skies, then makes them available for free use, especially if you just happened on this site by accident. Stop for a moment and think about photographs that command attention, that draw you to them and demand a second look. When looking though old photos that ones that grab our attention are not the posed ones, no, it's the ordinary street scenes that no-one thinks to take. These are the images that trigger thoughts, memories and emotions of yesteryear.

Where do you go when you need a particular free image for a design project? Yes you could take a digital camera and walk outside and photograph the sky yourself, but when you want blue sky it's raining. When you want a butterfly it's winter etc.

My personal love of this kind of image started many years ago with film cameras, often there would be a few exposures left at the end of a cassette, so what do you do with them when the cost of developing and printing is the same whether there are 24 or 36 goods prints or 18? That's where those strange shots of traffic lights, brick walls and concrete started. There was one of clothes pegs that many people commented on more than the holiday snaps, so began the collection or walls, styles, paths etc.

Sadly the box containing hundreds of prints of various sizes proved a disappointment when the time came to transfer them to this site. Whether it's my skill and critical eye that has improved over the years it's hard to say. But when the images were reviewed they were just not up to the required standard. Focus, exposure and print quality were simply not good enough. Perhaps that comes from my graphic design background where you really have to be your own sharpest critic.

The collection is now over 30 thousand free digital images, that's a huge task to sort, classify into a logical structure and edit, not to mention the hosting requirement. Modern digital cameras can produced very large image files, which means that lots of space is needed. Each original image is around 3 megabytes so a thousand originals occupies something like 3GB, add to that the thumbnails and previews and you start to need a very large hosting package. Most of the so-called 'unlimited storage' hosting providers do not actually give unlimited space or bandwidth. When you read their terms and conditions there are strict limits. That means a very large conventional host is needed and preferably a dedicated server, that's not cheap which is why there is a subscription charge if you want the original images at full size.

If you find any problems with this site do please email, so we can do something about it. We would really like to see what people do with these images, so when you have finished a design why not send us a link or image that we can add to the examples page? A linkto texturestogo.com would be appreciated too.
